Treating the whole self - why acupuncture is different
Treating the whole self: why acupuncture is different
People often ask me how acupuncture differs from conventional medicines. While there are similarities, acupuncture adopts a fundamentally different approach.
A holistic view
Like conventional medicine, people seek out acupuncture to address symptoms including migraines, digestive issues, musculoskeletal conditions, fertility, mental health, hormonal issues and much more.
While acupuncture can be very effective in treating these symptoms, it does so in a different way – by taking a much more holistic view of the body, and looking at the interconnectedness of the whole.
Understanding the bigger picture
With acupuncture, we don’t see symptoms in isolation. Instead they’re a product of a system that is out of balance. Treatments get to the root cause of an issue, eliminating rather than just suppressing symptoms.
When I meet patients, we start with an in-depth discussion of their symptoms, life, and overall health. This allows me to build up a picture of how their whole system is working and identify any imbalances. It also helps me create a highly individualised diagnosis and treatment plan, viewing all symptoms as related to one another.
Getting results
During diagnosis and treatment I assess the quality and balance of qi (chi), the body’s vital energy, working to enhance energy where needed and to clear any blockages to promote the smooth flow of energy.
This means the results are more far reaching than simply addressing the symptoms originally presented. The reduction or elimination of symptoms are often accompanied by the disappearance of niggles, aches and pains, and an increased sense of well-being.
Patients have recently remarked to me that, “The sun has come out”, “I feel more like myself,” and “I am more aware of what my body needs and when to rest.”
Acupuncture is a complete form of medicine with wide-reaching benefits that can make a profound impact on your health and general wellbeing.
